Ah, it's May Day, a day that has meant many things through out the ages. For Roman pagans it began as a festival for the goddess flora. Many pagan holidays became Christianized... and sanitized and now Roman Catholics have made it a celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is fairly common for Mary's head to be crowned in flowers and now we have come full circle. For the rest of us it is the first day of summer.
Today's painting was a special request from a special friend. She wanted me to paint an angel to remind her of our friendship. Our small community has been plagued by the loss of many of our children through the years. I came from a family that lost a young son, my brother, and it is something that never leaves your heart. Families move on and repair their lives, but we all know that a Mother, or Father, are never supposed to lose a child to illness or tragedy. My friend's faith gave her the strength to overcome her pain and sadness and she will always be a heroine to me. I created the painting from a photo that I took of this amazing, snow white, marble statue that I came across in Umbria, Italy. It touched my heart.
I'll end this little tale with a wish for love, and light, and strength for all my friends, known and unknown, that are trying to find their way, too. And one other thought...how come it's snowing like crazy on the first day of summer!
